This is the my 1st in a series of blog posts from my ‘SnapChat Family’ whom you can find on the Recruiting SnapChat Directory post I created.
Matthew Horne from Newcastle University whom recently been featured in the Guardians article UK Universities make their messages more SnapChatty.
Has very kindly agreed to be interviewed in a bit more detail on how he is making the platform work for the University.
Here’s what Matthew had to say…
When did you first become aware of Snap Chat as a platform?
As a university we’ve been using it since April 2015 after it became apparent a large proportion of our target audience were using the channel.
What do you like about it?
It’s quick, simple and fun. The stories feature is a great short form content creator, and the number of tools built in to the app to get creative is fantastic.
How do you engage your students with it?
We use our Snapchat account for all kinds of different things. From advertising the latest vacancies available on and around campus to showcasing student life through account takeovers and providing short form content for them to engage with like polls and doodle shares.
Do you engage with employers (eg takeovers)?
We keep our takeovers specifically for current students so they can show off what they get up to on their course or with their society/sports team.
We do work with our Careers Service to help promote the huge range of employment opportunities available to our students, whether it’s recruitment fairs, vacancies available or Q&A sessions with advisorsexperts.
How are you measuring your ROI?
Unless you’re a huge brand with access to Snapchat Discovery, the analytics in Snapchat is difficult to be honest. We have a manual process of logging the stats for each story so we can see engagement rates and audience retention.
These are our key KPIs with the channel. We also receive ad hoc questions through Snapchat from current students, applicants and alumni. Unlike other social networks, at the moment there’s little invested in the channel other than staff time , so investment is small.
Which Snappers do you take inspiration from?
A great place to see the kind of content our key audience engage with is the Snapchat Discovery section. Also, we get a lot of snaps sent to us from our followers which helps us get good ideas about the content being shared by our audience.
What your biggest success story from the platform?
Over the summer we were able to run three different takeovers from research expeditions around the world, including from the base of a volcano in Chile which was a great way to showcase student experience. We also got great feedback on the “Ask us Anything” sessions we ran in the run up to various key application stages such as UCAS Deadline Day and Results Day.
What tips can you give to a recruiter starting out on the platform?
As with any social network, you need to use it personally to know how to use it professionally. Learn what features are available and the kind of things your target audience us it for then experiment. Just don’t go hard on sales messages – Snapchat is a fun space for sharing short content, not a serious sales message in a suit place.
Who are the best people to follow?
Other than Newcastleuni? Arnie is a genius on Snapchat and captures his events around the world well. Father Marquette is another great example of a fun way a university can use the channel. Also, weratedogs but that’s just because dogs should take the internet crown from cats.
What’s the future for Snap Chat & Recruitment ?
Tough to say but there’s probably going to be a move more towards opening the platform up to smaller companies wanting to advertise. Hopefully decent analytics will follow.
With the use of geofilters recruiters could get smart and target users close to where top jobs are. But as with other channels, with more advertising comes an increase in people jumping to the next big thing.
End
Thanks again to Matthew for letting us into his world of SnapChat.
I hope this was useful.
